Is anybody still making page 1 on Google with Squidoo? Yes, but I hardly ever see any Squidoo in searches these days to be honest. I get the impression Google is being a bit more selective on quite what it includes from Squidoo’s list of pages. Squidoo still has a PR of 7, which is pretty high, so if you build the right page in theory you should be able to ride on that PR.

People tell me Google is looking for unique content on Squidoo, but again I am not so sure it’s as simple as that. I have made several test pages on Squidoo on a variety of topics, and to be honest I see no pattern at all as to which have been listed and which not. My most popular lens, by a factor of 2 over any other lens, is not even listed at all on Google! Yet its content is pretty unique to Squidoo and it’s not a SELL SELL SELL page, in fact there are several completely free links on it and no EBay/Amazon stuff.

The pages Google has listed are actually generally the ones I consider the worst, dull, no real content.

If I Digg (PR8) and Twitter (9) my lens then I generally find it is there on the first page of Google for the keywords I wanted. Digg normally coming out on top for some reason despite its lower PR, I can only assume its down to the extra descryption you get with Digg. Using Stumble (PR3) gives no great benefit, though I normally do that anyway. Pretty much the same for the other promotional sites, though there is no harm in promoting on them (back links can always be useful, well to a point). The Digg and Twitter links are almost always above my straight Squidoo link, when there is one of course!

If you want to try and get something out of Squidoo then my only advice is make it as unique as you can, pick something people actually search for but there is not too much competition (the keyword tool I give away at www.helptoworkonline.com will find those for you) and make sure you promote your lens. Certainly don’t rely completely on Squidoo to get your marketing done!
